How Does Dental Health Affect Your Body?

Physicians, these days, prefer a holistic approach to treating patients to examine overall health. Studies show that situations of severe gum disease often aggravate due to underlying chronic health issues. The mouth is the way to the body, and if the bacteria grows and triggers infection, it can lead to many other diseases. Here inflammation continues to spread unless it is brought under control. For this, one should have an excellent immune system to fight the bacteria and its spread in the body.

Heart Diseases

Severe gum disease periodontitis triggers heart disease due to unhealthy diet, smoking, excess body weight, etc. In some cases, gum disease directly raises the risk of heart problems. The reason behind this is the inflammation in the mouth that triggers the inflammation in blood vessels and results in further problems.

What Kind Of Health Problems Are Linked With Oral Health?

Oral health can contribute to other health issues like:

  1. Pneumonia Bacteria in the mouth often goes to the lungs, causing problems of pneumonia along with other respiratory issues.
  2. Pregnancy & Birth Problems: Gum disease can result in premature birth or low baby birth weight when suffering from gum issues during pregnancy.
  3. Endocarditis:  It mainly triggers when there is an infection in the inner lining of heart valves or chambers that occurs due to germs or bacteria coming from other body parts, such as the mouth. It spreads through the bloodstream and then gets attached to the heart, worsening the heart disease
  4. Osteoporosis: It is a bone-weakening disease that can trigger tooth or bone loss gum problems. Some drugs treat the pain but carry a small risk of damaging the bones of your jaw.

However, other problems are caused by eating disorders, certain cancers, immune disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. So, one should not neglect the gum problem as soon as they start to show. The initial signs are enough to see a doctor and try to minimize the risks at the earliest.

One should protect oral health and maintain a healthy dental routine. It is better to go through routine oral checkups to prevent severe problems. It is important to be aware that oral hygiene is a must and if that is maintained, further health issues can be reduced.
